The Open Day

Last Updated on Tuesday, 09 October 2012

The Open Day held on the afternoon 22 September 2012 was hailed a success by many of those attending. These included over 200 former pupils who were at the school between 1927 and 1977 and over 300 additional visitors comprising former pupils from later periods, their families and the community.

On the afternoon we were blessed with sunny weather and most of the school was open together with the grounds for visitors to look round. The displays were focussed in three main areas – the hall, which was packed at times, the corridors by the library and a number of classrooms near the reception entrance. The historical displays (1927-1977) provide a wealth of photographs, many of which had not been seen before by the former pupils and most came from the collection by the former teacher Mr Ronald Laidler and former pupils. The displays included both mounted panels and photographic books, the latter also providing an additional wide range of photographs and information from 1977 to date.

The highlight for many during the afternoon was having the opportunity to meet the much loved teacher Mr Laidler again, now in his 90s and stories of how he has inspired interest in nature and the environment abound. We were very pleased he was able to come with his son Julian, who also attended the school and who helped find some of the photographs used in the displays.

A great many positive comments were received after the event by both Graham Harris, the project co-ordinator for the historical displays and the school and the efforts by current pupils, the teachers and other volunteers was much appreciated, and made the day a success.

Refreshments were also provided in the library throughout the afternoon and two 85th birthday cakes were among the many cakes consumed during the event.

During, and since the event a number of new photographs have been provided to Graham Harris and any more group or class photographs up to 1977 would be very welcome - please send to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
